The Son of Hippotes

  • The third Aeolus
  • Son of Mimas (the son of the first Aeolus)
  • Aeolus lived on the floating island of Aeolia and was visited by Odysseus and his men in the Odyssey
  • He gave them a bag containing the four winds to ensure smooth sailing
  • Odysseus's crew members greedily opened it and they were blown back to Aeolia where Aeolus refuses to further help them

The Son of Hellen

  • The first Aeolus
  • Son of Hellen and the nymph, Orseis
  • Founder of the Aeolian race
  • Brother of Dorus, Xuthus and Amphictyon
  • Married Enarete, daughter of Deimachus
  • Ruler of Aeolia
  • Had 9 sons: Crethus, Sisyphus, Deioneus, Salmoneus, Athamas, Perieres, Cercaphas, Mimas, and Magnes
  • 5 daughters: Calyce, Peisidice, Perimele, Alcyone and Arne
  • Arne was his illegitimate (born by parents that aren't married) daughter, she was the daughter of Melanippe and not Enarete
  • Melanippe is the daughter of the centaur, Chiron

The Son of Poseidon

  • The second Aeolus
  • Son of Poseidon and Arne (daughter of (the first) Aeolus)
  • The twin brother of Boeotus
  • Arne told her father that she had a child with Poseidon
  • He did not believe her
  • Gave her to Metapontus, King of Icaria (who already had a wife, Autolyte (who Aeolus and Boeotus then killed))
  • Boeotus and Arne fleed to southern Thessaly and founded Boeotia
  • Aeolus fleed to a group of islands around the Tyrrhenian Sea
  • He named them Aeolian islands
  • Had six sons and daughters
  • Were all very happy until it was found out that his son, Marcareus and his daughter, Canace were having a child (together)
  • Aeolus expels Marcareus 
  • Canace commits suicide of shame
  • Some say that Aeolus fed the child to the dogs
  • Others say that the child, a daughter named Amphrissa, was rescued and later loved by Apollo

  • All three Aeoluses were thought to be related
